CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Basic and Special Kicks: This class is specifically designed to develop students’ skills in all aspects of Hapkido kicking techniques. Students will gain an understanding of the theories of body mechanics and applied anatomy in the proper application of kicking techniques from both attacking and defending positions. The 25 basic kicks, jump kicks, flying kicks, and spin kicks will be covered. All kicking requirements are explained from white to black belt including specific strike points that are designed to knockout and/or temporarily disable an attacker. Students will not only gain the kicking knowledge necessary for defense, but benefit from increased flexibility, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular endurance.
Hand Techniques - Wrist and Joint Locks: This class teaches students to take advantage of an attacker’s exposed wrists and joints with techniques designed to throw, break, or control. Offensive and defensive moves that compliment all aspects of Hapkido, and which work well regardless of size or strength of an attacker, are covered.
Self-Defense: Self-defense techniques range from compliance with pain and controlling an attacker, to strategic striking and take-downs. Students are taught to respond to an attack and effectively protect themselves from all manner of grabbing assaults. An increased level of self-confidence, muscle tone, and awareness are some of the added benefits of this class. All self-defense skills from white belt to black belt are covered.
Punch Defense/Kick Defense: Students learn to defend themselves against punching and kicking attacks through the use of joint locks, throws, and strikes. In addition, many confrontations end up with the attacker trying to intimidate and scare the defender prior to a physical strike, and as a result, this class further prepares the students by illustrating proper breathing and psychological techniques. A timely, proper response is key, and these techniques are proven to work in combat.
Short Stick/Knife Defense: This class covers how to use the dong-bong (Korean for short stick), or other improvised items, such as a hair brush, umbrella, or magazine, to defend against a single- or multiple-attacker situation. Basic strategic striking techniques are taught, along with evasive movement skills, which can be used against punching, kicking, or armed assaults. Knife defense is also covered in this class, and students learn Hapkido skills and strategies in dealing with a knife-wielding attacker. Skills include disarming techniques and defensive moves utilizing joint locks, breaks, and throws.
Judo Throws and Defenses: Comprised of a comprehensive, in-depth study of throwing skills, the techniques of Judo are the primary focus of this class. Judo involves the principles of applied physics and body leverage mechanics in order to allow a smaller person to throw a physically stronger and larger opponent. Strategies are taught in respect to movement, combination techniques, and counter throws. These throws are an excellent compliment to all Hapkido skills. This class provides a great workout, building muscle tone and cardiovascular stamina.
Ground Defense and Sit-down Techniques: This class covers how to defend oneself from a ground and seated position. The majority of fights end up on the ground, and knowledge of such skills gives the Hapkidoist an advantage in dealing with this type of potentially harmful situation. Whether the attacker is standing, sitting, or on the ground as well, skills are covered to prepare students for numerous situations. Many traditional Hapkido techniques are applied from a cross-legged or kneeling position, and can then be modified for use while sitting in a chair. Throws, joint-locks, and pressure points are all examined.
Black Belt Class: Open only to students of black belt level, this class covers techniques needed to attain second and third degree rank, some of which include: longstaff and cane training, double throws, and advanced defense skills.
